Exploring opportunities for proven oil and gas reserves in the MENA region
After proving our chops in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, we’re focused on taking our experience, our knowledge and our competitive advantage, through a proven innovative multilateral horizontal well technology, to the international stage in regions such as Middle East/North Africa (MENA).
On June 3, 2024, Sonoro Energy announced a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to acquire, through a subsidiary, 20% of UAE-based MENACo, a well management, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services company in the MENA region.
MENACo is a party to a five-year service agreement with a national oil company in the MENA region to provide oil and gas well management and EPC services. The agreement calls for MENACo to support the state entity in increasing area production by more than 100,000 bopd, through:
Well reactivation, workover and re-entry of shut-in or suspended wells
EPC projects to replace or improve associated infrastructure or facilities
Sub-surface reservoir optimization studies, operational enhancement, maintenance and training
“We are excited with Sonoro’s participation in MENACo, establishing a MENA country entry position in the oil and gas sector along with key relationships with major stakeholders,” said Richard Wadsworth, Sonoro Energy’s Chief Executive Officer.
“Directly and indirectly, Sonoro intends to support MENACo with key well management personnel applying our experience in the upstream oil and gas production and development areas to further support the national oil company in reaching its objectives.”
Applying multilateral horizontal well technology
In December 2023, Sonoro successfully drilled its first multilateral horizontal well on this Waseca channel fairway near Kerrobert, SK, with four horizontal legs and a total lateral length of about 1,600 meters.
The innovative multilateral horizontal well technology utilized in this well was developed in collaboration with Modern Wellbore Solutions—a strategic advancement now proven to enable the installation of slotted liners at multiple junction points within a single well, allowing for unparalleled access to multiple reservoir sections from one vertical well bore.
Production commenced in January 2024 via a Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sand (CHOPS) process typical of the area, and as of February, we made our first oil sales from the 14-29 well.
Said Wadsworth: “We are enthusiastic to have this well placed on production (and) see an expected higher well productivity resulting from this reservoir, multilateral well strategy and technology.”
